Developing and Validating a Socio-Technical BIM-Lean Integration Maturity Model for Predicting Construction Project Performance
Abstract
Abstract
Construction projects rely on knowledge distributed among temporary, multidisciplinary teams, firms, and lifecycle stages. Practical judgment often remains with experienced participants, while written accounts may omit the conditions and reasoning needed for later use. This research examines how construction scholarship explains the movement of project knowledge from capture through sharing and retrieval to reuse on another project. It treats these activities as distinct, and considers tacit expertise alongside explicit records, with attention to who contributes knowledge, who needs it, and where it must travel. The planned approach is a qualitative synthesis of published, peer-reviewed research from 2022–2026. The available material supports an analytical framework for extraction and appraisal: identify each study’s setting, lifecycle stage, knowledge activity, method, intended users, and evidence of application; distinguish proposed mechanisms from reported practices and observed outcomes; and retain contextual limits when comparing findings. Prior accounts describe barriers such as delayed reporting, staff movement, unread or inaccessible records, differing terminology, siloed work, and late stakeholder involvement. They also propose reviews, classification, expert consultation, knowledge maps, and BIM-supported systems. These descriptions identify candidate mechanisms, but do not establish that any arrangement consistently enables cross-project reuse. Technical examples further show why a lesson needs its operating conditions and outcome measures to support later appraisal. No completed search, screening record, or eligible study set for the target period is available; therefore, the extent and persistence of reported gaps cannot yet be assessed. The intended contribution is an evidence-informed framework that separates availability, interpretation, and application, while marking uncertain relationships and avoiding claims of validation until eligible studies are appraised.
