Abstract
Over 33% of global soils are contaminated with heavy metals (e.g., Cd, Pb, As), threatening agriculture and food security. Biochar—a carbon-rich material made from pyrolyzed organic matter—can immobilize heavy metals, reducing their bioavailability. Its effectiveness depends on the surface area, porosity, and functional groups.
