Abstract
The United States and Canada have lost three billion birds since 19701. The Indian River Lagoon is a vital habitat for local and migratory biotas. Urbanization around the lagoon is rapidly increasing, impacting biodiversity through habitat loss and introduction of invasive species. Birds are bioindicators of ecosystem health, contamination, and climate change. They can be assigned three urbanization levels: “exploiter,” “adapter,” and “avoider”.
