Abstract
This interview with John Reynolds, conducted on June 11, 2025, chronicles his unexpected yet impactful 39-year coaching career at the Florida Institute of Technology. Originally a contractor from Rochester, New York, Reynolds moved to Melbourne in 1984 and was persuaded to become the assistant coach for the inaugural women's basketball team in 1986. He soon took over as head coach, a role he held for nearly four decades. Reynolds discusses his coaching philosophy, which prioritized developing his players into successful human beings over simply winning games. He reflects on the deep, family-like relationships he built with his student-athletes, the challenges of recruiting to a rigorous technical university, and the significant changes he witnessed in college athletics. He credits his longevity and success to the support of his wife, Gloria, and the unique, goal-oriented culture of Florida Tech.
